How Do I Get Started?

So you have made the decision to pursue Chaplaincy. Congratulations!

But where do you start? While there are several ways to start your journey, let’s look at an easy way to take the first steps.

  1. CHOOSE YOUR PATH – Review the different chaplain levels and the disciplines to see which ones fit best for you. If you are just getting started, and want the most direct path, focus on the Chaplain 1 requirements. You may want to get ordained and/or add a discipline after you achieve your Chaplain 1 certificate.
  1. REGISTER FOR A CLASS – By registering for a class or course, our system will capture your email and profile information and securely store it. By capturing your email address as a record locator, over time, you will be able to access the system to see your previous course registrations or donations made after your first course.

Go to the Class Courses page and review the classes that you are interested in attending. Each class will show a course description, the material that will be covered, along with when and where that class is being offered. After you complete registration, a confirmation email will be emailed to you, enabling you to electronically add the class to your calendar.

Don’t worry about your objectives later changing. That is expected. We just want to help as much as we can in you meeting your short-term needs.

  1. ATTEND A CLASS – You will have the opportunity to capitalize on the in-depth training, practical exercises, and real-life examples, based on years of experience of LSM Instructors.
  1. REVIEW YOUR PROGRESS – After you have completed a class you will receive a Certificate of Completion through Living Shield Ministries and will be able to monitor your course history and assess progress toward your objectives.
  1. ACHIEVE CERTIFICATION – Upon completion of a required set of courses, you will be awarded in-person a specialized certificate indicating your achievement.
  1. REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE – The most effective way to build on the skills and knowledge you have gained in acquiring your certification is to put it into practice. Take a volunteer position, go and practice using your newly learned chaplain skills to help others in need.
  1. BUILD YOUR KNOWLEDGE BASE – Being in the field helps us to recognize the skills we have and those that we still need to acquire and develop. This is a great time to come back and review your next steps.  Also read some of the books in our Chaplain Library.
